Terms of Use

Version 1.0.0-draft · Last updated 2026-08-09

These Terms of Use govern access to and use of the Bookends website and related services. This is draft product language pending counsel review.

1. The Bookends service

Bookends is a community bibliographic cataloguing platform for readers, collectors, and contributors. We help people describe, discover, and organise bibliographic works, editions, persons, and related catalogue entities.

Bookends is not a bookstore and does not sell books through checkout on this site. When you follow links that lead to third-party retailers, those purchases complete on the retailer’s site under the retailer’s terms.

2. Accounts and acceptable use

You must provide accurate registration information and keep your credentials secure. You are responsible for activity under your account.

You agree not to misuse the service, including by attempting unauthorized access, disrupting availability, scraping in ways that harm the platform, harassing others, or submitting unlawful, deceptive, or infringing content.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or community moderation rules, subject to applicable product workflows (including appeals where available).

3. User-generated content and moderation

Contributions (catalogue edits, reviews, comments, and similar content) must be accurate to the best of your knowledge and respect other people’s rights.

Bookends uses trust levels, contribution review, and moderation tools to keep the catalogue reliable. We may edit, reject, hide, or remove content that violates product rules or applicable law. Community moderation expectations are applied at the product level as described in in-app guidance and policies.

4. Not the merchant of record

Bookends is not the merchant of record for purchases completed on third-party retailer websites. Prices, availability, shipping, returns, and payment are solely between you and the retailer. Any affiliate or outbound purchase links, if present, do not make Bookends the seller of the goods.

5. Intellectual property (draft)

The Bookends software, branding, and original platform materials are owned by Bookends or its licensors. You retain rights in content you create, and by submitting it you grant Bookends a license to host, display, and process it as needed to operate the service — COUNSEL TODO: counsel to finalize license wording.

6. Disclaimers and liability (draft)

The service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis to the fullest extent permitted by law. Catalogue information is community-maintained and may contain errors. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law — COUNSEL TODO.

7. Privacy and cookies

Personal data is processed as described in our Privacy Policy (/privacy). Cookies and similar technologies are described in our Cookie Policy (/cookies).

8. Governing law

Governing law and dispute venue will be stated here after counsel review (COUNSEL TODO). Until then, mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence continue to apply where required.

9. Changes

We may update these Terms from time to time. The version and last-updated date on this page identify the current revision published with the frontend.
